DePaul Takes Short Trip North To Face Wildcats

CHICAGO - DePaul wraps up the regular-season non-conference schedule locally with Friday night contest at Northwestern. The Blue Demons are in the midst of four straight road games that started on Dec. 22 with a 69-64 loss at Illinois State. DePaul opens the BIG EAST schedule with New Year's Eve game at Georgetown followed by a trip to Marquette on Jan. 4.

DePaul and Northwestern meet for the 30th time, but it's the first game since a 63-36 win for Northwestern on Dec. 6, 2008. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Evanston.

Friday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network with Dave Revsine (play-by-play) and Mike Kelley (analyst) handling the television duties. The MVP of the DePaul-Northwestern game earns the Waldo Fisher-Frank McGrath Award. DePaul last winner was Will Walker following a 54-53 win for the Blue Demons on Nov. 17, 2007. Dave Corzine was the first MVP in 1974.

DePaul enters the game at 7-5 after the five-point loss at Illinois State on Dec. 22. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his fourth season at DePaul and his 26th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Northwestern is 7-5 overall and is led by Chris Collins who is in his first season leading the Wildcats.

Following the Northwestern game, DePaul starts the BIG EAST schedule with a 5 p.m. ET game on New Year's Eve at Georgetown. The opener is the third of five straight BIG EAST games on FOX Sports 1 to kick off the conference season. The game can also be heard on WIND 560 AM.

Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,402-906 (.607) all-time... the 80-71 win at Milwaukee on Nov. 19 was game No. 2,300 in program history since the first fully-recognized season in 1923-24... men's basketball was played at DePaul prior to that season but records are incomplete... the 81-70 win over Florida Atlantic on Dec. 12 was win No. 1,400 since start of 1923-24 season... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 623 straight games... DePaul's last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 322-153 (.678) all-time at Allstate Arena... The Series: Friday is the 30th all-time meeting between the two programs... the Blue Demons hold a 19-10 advantage in the series... Friday's game is the first meeting since Dec. 2008... the two sides have played even over the last 14 meetings after DePaul won 11 straight from 1974-86.

The Last Meeting: Northwestern posted a 63-36 win over DePaul on Dec. 6, 2008 at Welsh-Ryan Arena... DePaul combined to shoot just .241 from the field... Dar Tucker was the only player to score more than eight points with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double... Kevin Coble led the Wildcats with 25 points and Craig Moore added 14.

Against the Big Ten Conference: DePaul is 79-66 all-time against the current membership of the Big Ten... Northwestern is DePaul's most common conference opponent followed by Indiana and Purdue... Indiana holds a 14-8 series lead over the Blue Demons and Purdue has a 12-9 advantage... DePaul's last game against a Big Ten opponent was an 86-85 loss against Minnesota on Nov. 24, 2001 at the Old Spice Classic.

It Could Happen: Brandon Young (543 FG) needs seven field goal to pass Terry Cummings (549 FG, 1979-82) 14th all-time... Young enters the Northwestern game tied with Brad Niemann (109 3pt. FG, 1987-91) in 13th place in career three-pointers... Young (148 steals) needs two steals to pass Peter Patton (149 steals, 1992-96) for ninth in school history... with 10 rebounds, Cleveland Melvin (666 rebs.) could move from 23rd to 20th place on the all-time rebound list... Quemont Greer (668 rebs., 2001-05) is 22nd, Bryant Bowden (671 rebs., 1992-96) is 21st and Marty Embry (675 rebs., 1982-86) is in 20th place.

Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul's 69-64 win at Illinois State on Dec. 22:
- The loss ended DePaul's six-game winning streak in non-conference road games... the Blue Demons entered the game with the nation's fourth-longest streak in that category.
- Brandon Young (1,546 pts.) moved into ninth on DePaul's all-time scoring list... Young (109 3pt. FG) also moved into a tie for 13th place on the all-time three-point field goal list.
- Sandi Marcius recorded his second career game of at least 10 rebounds.
- Cleveland Melvin's four points matched his career low as a starter (four vs. Notre Dame on Feb. 3, 2011 as a freshman).
- Melvin fouled out for the first time in his career (102 games)... he entered the Illinois State game with 14 total fouls over the 11 previous games this season.
