Blue Demons Fall at Georgetown
Brandon Young scored 16 points and Jamee Crockett added 10 as DePaul dropped a 90-66 game at No. 11 Georgetown on Wednesday night.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - DePaul concludes the 2013 calendar and begins the BIG EAST schedule on New Year's Eve with a 5 p.m. ET game in Washington, D.C. The league opener is part of a five-game New Year's Eve extravaganza on FOX Sports 1 that feature 12 straight hours of BIG EAST basketball.

The Blue Demons are in the midst of four straight road games that started on Dec. 22 with a 69-64 loss at Illinois State followed by a 57-56 win at Northwestern on Dec. 27. DePaul opens the BIG EAST schedule with Tuesday's game at Georgetown followed by a trip to Marquette on Jan. 4.

Tuesday's game will be televised on FOX Sports 1 with Dick Stockton (play-by-play) and Bob Wenzel (analyst) handling the television duties. DePaul enters the game at 8-5 after the one-point win at Northwestern on Dec. 27. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his fourth season at DePaul and his 26th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Georgetown is 8-3 overall and is led by John Thompson III who is in his 10th season leading the Hoyas.

Following the Georgetown game, DePaul plays at Marquette on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons and Golden Eagles meet for the 113th time at 1 p.m. at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

BIG EAST Openers: The Blue Demons are 1-7 in BIG EAST first games with the 84-76 win over Villanova to start the 2007-08 conference schedule serving as the single victory. DePaul's league-opening win over the 17th-ranked Wildcats sparked a 3-1 BIG EAST start for DePaul to set the best conference start in program history. A year ago, the Blue Demons dropped a 73-72 decision against Seton Hall at Allstate Arena on Jan. 2.

DePaul opens the league schedule with back-to-back road games for the third time as a member of the BIG EAST. The Blue Demons travel to Marquette on Saturday afternoon. DePaul also started league play with two on the road in 2006-07 and 2010-11.

DePaul has been a member of a conference since the 1991-92 season starting with membership in the Great Midwest Conference followed by a 10-year run in Conference USA. The Blue Demons joined the BIG EAST in July 2005 and are 5-16 all-time in conference openers.

Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,403-906 (.608) all-time... the 80-71 win at Milwaukee on Nov. 19 was game No. 2,300 in program history since the first fully-recognized season in 1923-24... men's basketball was played at DePaul prior to that season but records are incomplete... the 81-70 win over Florida Atlantic on Dec. 12 was win No. 1,400 since start of 1923-24 season... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 624 straight games... DePaul's last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 322-153 (.678) all-time at Allstate Arena... DePaul is 8-1 (.889) all-time in games at McGrath-Phillips Arena... in each of Oliver Purnell's three-plus seasons at DePaul, the Blue Demons are 9-1 against Chicagoland opponents (Chicago State, Illinois-Chicago, Loyola-Chicago, Northern Illinois, Northwestern)... in the Purnell era, the Blue Demons are 20-3 - including 12 straight wins (6-0 in 2012-13/5-0 in 2013-14) - when scoring 80 or more points... DePaul 77-70 overtime win over Chicago State on Dec. 15 snapped an eight-game losing streak in overtime games... it was the first extra-frame win since a 68-66 win on Nov. 28, 2009 against Detroit and the first overtime victory for Oliver Purnell at DePaul... The Opponent: Georgetown stands at 8-3 following a 92-57 win over Florida International on Dec. 28... the Hoyas have won seven of their last eight games with the lone defeat at No. 18 Kansas (86-64) on Dec. 21... D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera leads the team with 16.3 points per game while Markel Starks adds a scoring average of 15.9... the duo has also combined for 42 of the 59 three's by the Hoyas this season... head coach John Thompson III is in his 10th season at Georgetown... DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is 0-4 all-time against Georgetown.

The Series: Tuesday is the 28th all-time meeting between the two programs... the Hoyas hold a 21-6 advantage in the series... Georgetown has won the last 12 meetings including a 90-66 decision last season... DePaul's last victory over Georgetown was a 78-51 win on Jan. 22, 1994... the two sides first played during the 1941-42 season with a 34-29 DePaul victory.

The Last Meeting: D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 33 points to lead 11th-ranked Georgetown to a 90-66 win over DePaul on Feb. 20, 2013 at Verizon Center... Smith-Rivera went 10-of-12 from the field overall, including a 5-for-6 effort from three-point range... Brandon Young led the Blue Demons with 16 points and Jamee Crockett added 10 off the bench... the Hoyas raced to a 43-29 lead at halftime and finished the game with a team field goal percentage of .635 (33-52)... DePaul combined to shoot just .385 (25-65) from the field and .188 (3-16) from three-point range.

It Could Happen: Brandon Young (545 FG) needs five field goals to pass Terry Cummings (549 FG, 1979-82) 14th all-time... Young enters the Georgetown game tied with Brad Niemann (109 3pt. FG, 1987-91) in 13th place in career three-pointers... Cleveland Melvin (672 rebs.) could move from 21st to 19th place on the all-time rebound list... Marty Embry (675 rebs., 1982-86) is in 20th place and Lance Williams (678 rebs., 1998-02) is in 19th place all-time.

Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul's 57-56 win at Northwestern on Dec. 27:
- DePaul is now 9-1 against Chicagoland opponents under Oliver Purnell.
- The 56 points allowed where the fourth-fewest for DePaul under Oliver Purnell.
- DePaul extended its streak to 624 straight games with a three-pointer by going 1-for-10.
- Cleveland Melvin moved into 21st place on the all-time rebounding list... he has 672 career rebounds.
- DePaul leads the series, 20-10... the win was the first for DePaul in Evanston since a 71-61 victory on Dec. 16, 1995 and snapped a four-game losing streak at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Trending: DePaul is 5-2 in the month of December... a year ago, the Blue Demons went 5-1 in December... DePaul has won at least five games in December in the last three seasons... in the last four games, the Blue Demons have totaled 32 blocked shots... DePaul's last two opponents (Illinois State and Northwestern) combined to shoot .316 (37-117) from the field... four different players have recorded six double-doubles through 13 games this season... since the 2002-03 season, four teams have featured at least four players with a double-double... the 2003-04 squad had five (Andre Brown, Drake Diener, Quemont Greer, Delonte Holland, Sammy Mejia) with at least one double-double... Rookies of the Week: A DePaul freshman claimed the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week in two of the first three weeks of the season. Most recently, Billy Garrett Jr. earned the honor for a third time to give DePaul four Rookie of the Week honors over the first seven weeks of the season. Tommy Hamilton IV was named the league's first Rookie of the Week on Nov. 18 followed by Garrett on Dec. 2, 16 and 30.

Hamilton averaged 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over DePaul's first three games of the season. He opened his collegiate career with an impressive 16-point, 11-rebound double-double against Grambling State on Nov. 9. The Chicago native achieved the feat in the first half alone with 11 points and 10 boards against the Tigers.

Garrett picked up his first weekly honor after putting together his first double-double and averaging 10.7 points and 4.3 assists in three games against Wichita State, Texas and Oregon State.

Garrett was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the second time after averaging 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in wins over Florida Atlantic and Chicago State.     The Chicago native scored eight of DePaul's first 10 points in overtime to lead the Blue Demons to the seven-point win over Chicago State. He finished the game with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists against the Cougars.

The third honor for Garrett came after he tallied the game-winning basket at Northwestern for a 57-56 DePaul win. He finished the game with nine points, four assists, two blocked shots, two rebounds and a steal.

Who's Next: DePaul travels to Marquette for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday... the series with Marquette is the longest in DePaul history at 112 all-time games...
