ORLANDO, Fla. - DePaul opened its Spring portion of the 2011-12 schedule on Monday with two losses in a pair of matches at The Match Play. The Blue Demons dropped their morning match against Villanova before falling to Loyola-Chicago in Monday's afternoon round.
Villanova topped DePaul, 3.5-2.5, in the morning session after the start of the tournament was delayed by frost on the course. Moritz Ackerhans and John Pavelko posted victories for the Blue Demons in their individual matches.
Ackerhans defeated Derek Jones, 2-and-1, while Pavelko put together a 4-and-2 victory over Robby Meador. Ben Westley halved his match against Michael Kania while Russell Budd (2-and-1), Jan Juelicher (4-and-3) and Alex Lloyd (4-and-3) each lost in their matches.
The afternoon session saw Loyola-Chicago post a 4.0-2.0 win over DePaul. The Blue Demons took the top two individual matches with Westley and Budd posting victories. Westley knocked off Charlie Schaffer, 2-and-1, and Budd topped Alex Cusumano by a 3-and-1 score.
The Ramblers swept the final four matches with Ackerhans (2-and-1), Juelicher (2-and-1), Lloyd (3-and-1) and Pavelko (5-and-4) falling in their respective matches.
DePaul faces Illinois State on Tuesday morning in the third match of the two-day event. The Match Play is being played at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.
