PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Maximilian Mayer led three strong performances by DePaul golfers on Monday as the Blue Demons made a dramatic move up the team leaderboard into fifth place. The Blue Demons started the day in 12th before passing seven teams to settle into fifth heading into Tuesday's final round.
Mayer, Ben Westley and Russell Budd led the way for the Blue Demons with rounds of 71, 72 and 73 in the second round. Mayer's season-best score of 71 on Tuesday was the best round of the day as the freshman was one of five players in the field to shot an even par score in the second round. Westley is in a tie for 11th on the individual standings list followed by Mayer in a group in 16th and Budd in a tie for 20th.
Westley's two-round score of 148 (+6) leads the team followed by Mayer's 149 (+7) and Budd's total of 150 (+8). Moritz Ackerhans shot a 78 for the second straight day and is tied for 44th while Charles Boucher carded an 80 on Tuesday and is tied for 52nd.
Notre Dame holds a seven-stroke lead heading into the final round of play after carding 290 in the second round for two-day total of 583. The Irish are followed by Louisville with a team total of 590 followed by Villanova in third place with a team score of 594. USF is just a shot ahead of DePaul in fourth-place at 602 while spots four through 11 in the team standings are separated by just six strokes. Seton Hall and Cincinnati are a stroke behind's DePaul's team score of 603 in a tie for sixth.
Individually, Niall Platt of Notre Dame, Karsten Clements of Louisville and Notre Dame's Max Scodro are tied for first with two-day scores of 143 (+1). The trio is a shot ahead of Cincinnati's Joe Kastelic in fourth place and two shots ahead of two players tied for fifth.
The final 18 holes start Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. ET at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club's Copperhead Course. DePaul's best finish in BIG EAST Championship play is a fifth-place showing in 2007.
