OKATIE, S.C. - DePaul freshman Jonathan Hewett sits in tie for fourth place and the Blue Demons are also in fourth after the first round of the BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Championship on Sunday at Callawassie Island. Hewett is three shots off the lead and fired a one-over 73 in his inaugural BIG EAST Championship. The Blue Demons combined for a 306 and are one shot behind Seton Hall, who is in third place.
St. John's leads the nine-team field after recoding a 290 in the first round. Ben Ludlam is tournament's individual leader and was one of three players to finish the day under par. Ludlam fired a two-under 70 and led his team to a five-stroke lead over Marquette (295).
Hewett started his day with a double-bogey on the first hole but recovered by shooting a one-over 37 on the front nine. Hewett bogeyed 12 and 15, but closed out the afternoon by sinking a pair of birdies on 17 and 18 which propelled the freshman into a tie for fourth place with St. John's Obe Ayton.
Moritz Ackerhans sits in four-way tie for ninth place. The Blue Demon senior fired a three-over 75 and closed out the front and back nine with a birdie.
James Lelliott (78), Jan Juelicher (80) and Adrian Halimi (82) rounded out the DePaul contingent at the Championship.
Halimi is the first Blue Demons to hit the teebox on Monday at 8:50 p.m. (ET). Hewett will be the final Blue Demon on the course and tees off a 9:30 p.m.
