Golf Takes Over Lead in BIG EAST Second Round

CHICAGO – Four DePaul golfers are in the top 13 as the Blue Demons took control of the BIG EAST Championship in Monday’s second round. DePaul combined for a team score of 294 on Monday and hold a seven-shot lead over second place Seton Hall heading into the final round on Tuesday.

Jonathan Hewett is tied for first place after firing a two-under 70 in the second round. He’s in a three-way tie for first place with Butler’s Joey Arcuri and Marquette’s Matt Bachmann. Over the first 36 holes, Hewett, Arcuri and Bachmann are even par with scores of 144.

Garret Buckley is in seventh place with a tournament score of 147 (+3) following his score of 72 on Tuesday. Jonathan Goldstein and Freddy Thomas are in a group in 13th place. Goldstein finished his second round with a 76 (+4) while Thomas shot a 79 (+7). Both players hold tournament scores of 154 (+10).

James Lelliott is two shots behind Goldstein and Thomas in a group in 21st place. He carded a 76 (+4) in the second circuit and stands at 156 (+12) after 36 holes.

DePaul holds the team lead with a two-round score of 596 (+20) and is seven shots ahead of second-place Seton Hall. The Pirates are at 603 (+27) with Marquette and Butler tied for third at 613 (+37).

The final round of the BIG EAST Championship is set for Tuesday morning as the Blue Demons go for their first conference championship. Start time is scheduled for 8 a.m. ET at Callawassie Island Club.
