Golf Finishes Fourth at BIG EAST Championship

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – The DePaul golf team closed out the 2017 BIG EAST Championship on Tuesday at the Callawassie Island Club with a fourth place finish. Blue Demon senior Jonathan Hewett finished in sixth place to lead the way with Garret Buckley also finishing in the top 10 in ninth.

Hewett finished Tuesday’s final round five-over par (77), after carding the Blue Demons’ best round of the tournament with a 70 (-2) in Monday’s second round. Hewett’s sixth-place finish marks his third top-10 finish of the year.

Marquette took home the team title after going two-under in the final round to finish 35-over (899). Seton Hall took second and finished one shot behind Marquette at (900) while Georgetown rounded out the top three at 901 (+37). DePaul combined to shoot a 906 (+44) to finish fourth.

Buckley, participating in his first BIG EAST Championship, finished ninth to secure the first top-10 finish of his DePaul career. Buckley fired rounds of 75, 72, and 78 to close out the tournament at nine-over par with a score of 225.

Freddy Thomas carded a 76 (+4) in the final round to close out the tournament in 18th place at 14-over (230). Thomas closes out the season with five top-25 performances.

Jonathan Goldstein finished 25th while James Lelliott rounded out the DePaul contingent in 30th.

The BIG EAST Championship marked the final tournament for head coach Betty Kaufmann who is retiring after 19 seasons. Assistant coach Marty Schiene will take over the program starting in the 2017-18 season.
