DePaul Finishes Fifth in Opening Event

BATAVIA, Ohio – The DePaul golf team placed fifth at the NKU Fall Classic to open the 2017-18 season. Freshman Joe McCarthy was the top finisher for the Blue Demons as he was among the top 10 individuals in the three-round, two-day event at Elks Run Golf Club.

McCarthy finished the tournament with a 73 on Monday for a tournament total of 218 (+5). He finished tied for seventh with Northern Kentucky’s Jacob Poore and was six shots behind Morehead State’s Nick Wilkens. Wilkens earned medalist honors with a one-under total of 212.

Freddy Thomas and Bobby Thomas followed McCarthy with top 25 finishes. Freddy Thomas posted a three-round score of 220 (+7) to finish in a tie for 12th while Bobby Thomas was in a group in 24th place with a score of 224 (+11). Freddy Thomas carded a 76 in the final round while Bobby Thomas fired a 73 in his final 18 holes.

Charlie Spencer-White and Garret Buckley rounded out their tournaments in a tie for 54th and 57th on Monday. Spencer-White posted a 79 on Monday for a tournament score of 234 (+21) and Buckley finished with a 74 for a total of 235 (+22).

Butler led the team leaderboard from start to finish and held off Oakland to claim the team title. Butler’s total of 868 (+16) was four shots better than second-place Oakland. The Blue Demons finished one shot behind host Northern Kentucky. DePaul’s team score of 890 (+38) was good for fifth among the 14 programs competing.

The Blue Demons face a short break and head to Louisville, Ky. this weekend for the Louisville Cardinal Challenge. The three-day event features 18 holes each day at the UofL Golf Club starting Friday.
