McCarthy Leads Blue Demons in Third Round

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Joe McCarthy finished in a tie for 28th to lead the DePaul golf team at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge. The freshman has led the team in each of the first two events of the 2017-18 season.

McCarthy posted a tournament score of 223 (+7) following his third-round score of 73 (+1) on Sunday. He was one of six players in 28th place and was DePaul’s top finisher for the second straight tournament.

Bobby Thomas and Charlie Spencer-White followed McCarthy in ties for 39th and 50th. Thomas put together a 54-hole total of 225 (+9) after shooting a 73 (+1) in the third round while Spencer-White’s 78 (+6) gave him a combined score of 228 (+12).

Garret Buckley, Freddy Thomas and Kyle Vincze rounded out the DePaul contingent at the Cardinal Challenge. Buckley finished in a group in 66th followed by Thomas and Vincze in a tie for 69th. Buckley carded a 76 (+4) on Sunday for a tournament score of 236 (+20). Thomas and Vincze both finished with a 237 (+21) with Thomas posting a 78 (+6) in the third round and Vincze finishing with a 90 (+18).

Louisville combined for a team total of 855 (-9) to win the team title while Miami’s Patrick Flavin earned medalist honors with a nine-under score of 207. The Blue Demons placed 13th on the team leaderboard.

Up next for DePaul is the Fighting Irish Classic on Oct. 8-9. The two-day event takes place at Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind.
