Blue Demons Move Up in Final Round to Finish Sixth
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The DePaul golf team moved up two spots to end the third and final round of the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational in sixth place. Having led the Blue Demons on day one, Greg Doherty paced the squad as he finished the tournament in a tie for ninth. The Blue Demons totaled a team score of 873 and moved up two spots in the team standings after settling in eighth following two rounds on the tournament’s first day. Doherty shot a one-over 72 on the final day for a three-round total of 213 (72-69-72). Nick Martin finished the two-day event in a tie for 27th at 219 (77-70-72) while Cory Blenkush and Ben Westley finished in a group at 38th overall with 223 strokes. Blenkush carded rounds of 78, 73 and 72 while Westley went 75, 77 and a personal-best 71 in round three. Michael Furci tied his personal-best 54-hole total with a 227 (73-78-76) to finish in a tie for 53rd while Charles Boucher was tied for 47th as an individual. Boucher shot rounds of 76, 72 and 77 for a total of 225. Texas Tech’s Chris Ward won the individual title with a three-round total of 11-under at 202. The Red Raiders won the team title with a combined 28-udner score of 824. UT-Arlington finished second, 20 strokes behind Texas Tech and Texas State was third at eight-over. DePaul started the third round in eighth place and passed Wichita State and Stephen F. Austin for sixth out of the 14 teams competing in San Antonio. Up next for the Blue Demons is the Ron Smith USF Invitational in Dade City, Fla. The tournament at Lake Jovita Golf Club is Mar. 6-8 and gives the Blue Demons a preview of the BIG EAST Championship layout. Lake Jovita is the site of the conference tournament, April 19-21.
