Golf Takes Fifth Place in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – Three Blue Demons finished with identical 54-hole scores of 224 as the DePaul golf team placed fifth at the Texas-San Antonio Intercollegiate.  Junior Will Cumberland, sophomore Cory Blenkush and freshman Greg Doherty tied five other golfers for 21st in the individual standings after Tuesday’s final 18 holes at the Oak Hill Country Club.

 

After carding a score of 152 through Monday’s first 36 holes, Blenkush shot a final round of 72.  Cumberland posted a 76-72-76 performance over the two day tournament, while Doherty shot rounds of 77, 72 and 75.  All three golfers finished 11 strokes over par.

 

Junior Matthew McMahon delivered a three-round score of 232 to finish 57th overall.  Sophomore Collin Piercy carded a 234 to finish fifth for DePaul and 65th in the standings.

 

The Blue Demons combined for a team score of 895, landing just four strokes behind host team and third place finisher Texas-San Antonio.  Sam Houston State topped the field of 17 teams with a score of 865.

 

Matt Miller of Illinois State grabbed the individual title with a five-under-par score of 208.

 

DePaul’s spring campaign continues Saturday, March 3 at the USF Invitational.  The tournament, hosted by BIG EAST rival South Florida, will be played at the Lake Jovita Country Club in Tampa, Florida.
