Spring Swing Starts in Hilton Head
CHICAGO - The Blue Demons open the Spring portion of the 2009-10 season in Hilton Head, S.C. at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. DePaul is one of 17 teams at the event hosted by Francis Marion University. The 2010 edition is the fifth Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate and features host Francis Marion and DePaul along with Cleveland State, Connecticut, Davidson, Elon, George Mason, Ohio University, Presbyterian College, Richmond, Samford, UT-Pan American, Wake Forest, Western Carolina, College of William & Mary, Wofford College, and defending tournament champion USC Aiken. DePaul's lineup this week features Greg Doherty, Michael Furci, Charles Boucher, Russell Budd and Ben Westley. Wexford Plantation is a par-71, 6,850-yard course in Hilton Head, S.C. The tournament schedule features two 18-hole rounds on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET each day. Match Play Warm-Up: With a Winter storm bearing down on Chicago, the Blue Demons got out of town early and faced off with Ohio University in a friendly match play on Saturday at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head. The meeting was the first chance for both teams to get outdoors prior to the start of play on Monday at Wexford Plantation. The Blue Demons won four of the five individual matches with Greg Doherty taking a 1 up decision over Chad Warmbein followed by Michael Furci's 4 and 3 win over Tim Gusweiler. Charles Boucher posted a 1 up victory over Stewart Jamieson and Ben Westley won his match, 3 and 1, over Phil Gieseter. The No. 4 match between Russell Budd and Paul Grauer saw Ohio's Grauer claim the win, 3 and 1. Fall Recap: Highlighting the Fall schedule was the team title at the John Dallio Memorial on Sept. 27 and 28. Greg Doherty birdied three of his last four holes to come from behind and win the individual title while leading the Blue Demons to the team crown at Ruffled Feathers GC. Doherty fired a three-round total of 217 to finish a stroke ahead of teammate Charles Boucher, Western Illinois' Kyle Peterman and David Byrne from Detroit. The Match Play concluded the Fall portion of the 2009-10 schedule as the Blue Demons finished fourth among the 11 BIG EAST programs competing. DePaul was eighth of 17 teams at the Adams Cup of Newport, Sept. 21-22 before winning the John Dallio Memorial. The Blue Demons finished sixth of 12 teams at the Xavier Invitational before placing eight of 12 teams at the Georgetown Intercollegiate. Doherty led the team with a 73.91 stroke average followed by Russell Budd (74.46) and Michael Furci (74.82). Furci posted a pair of top 10 finishes while Doherty's 68 in the first round of the John Dallio Memorial was the best round of the season.
