Golf Tied for Fifth After Round One of Ron Smith/USF Invitational



DADE CITY, Fla. The DePaul men’s golf team sits eight shots over par in a tie for fifth place following round one of the Ron Smith/USF Invitational.  Senior Will Cumberland and sophomore Greg Doherty lead the Blue Demons through 18 holes at Lake Jovita Country Club.

Cumberland and Doherty carded identical scores of 73 during Friday’s opening round.  The DePaul teammates both sit one shot over par in a tie for 14th place.  Senior Matthew McMahon and junior Cory Blenkush share a tie for 37th place as each Blue Demon shot a round of 75.  Junior Nick Martin trails by one stroke and holds a tie for 45th place after shooting a 76 during the opening round.

With two days and 36 holes remaining, Middle Tennessee State leads the field of 18 teams with a combined score of 287.  DePaul shares fifth place with Florida Southern after the squads matched first-day totals of 296.  Rafael Campos of VCU tops the individual standings with a seven-under-par score of 65.

The tournament continues on Saturday with second round tee times beginning at 7 a.m. (CST).  Action wraps up with Sunday’s final round.
