Golf Goes to Florida for USF Invite



CHICAGO - The Blue Demons join 22 other teams in the three-day, three-round USF Invitational this weekend. The tournament opens on Friday morning at the Lake Jovita Golf Club in Dade City, Fla. with 18 holes scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. USF is the host of the event this is in its 18th edition.

The USF Invitational features host USF and DePaul along with Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Campbell, Cincinnati, Columbus State, Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Florida Southern, Jacksonville State, Louisville, Marquette, Marshall, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri State, Nebraska, North Florida, Rhode Island, South Alabama, Troy, Villanova and Xavier.

DePaul's lineup this week features Greg Doherty, Michael Furci, Charles Boucher, Russell Budd and Ben Westley. Erik Peterson is also making the trip and playing as an individual.

The USF Invitational will be played on the North Course at Lake Jovita Golf Club this weekend. The North Course is a par-72, 7,226-yard course in Dade City, Fla. The tournament schedule features a 7:30 a.m. ET start for the early "wave" and a 11:30 a.m. ET start for the late "wave" on Friday and Saturday. Sunday's final round is an 8 a.m. ET shotgun start.

Wexford Review: DePaul opened the Spring campaign with a sixth-place showing at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Feb. 22-23 in Hilton Head, S.C. Ben Westley and Michael Furci led the way with a pair of top 10 finishes as DePaul took sixth out of 17 teams. Westley finished in a tie for third with rounds of 70 and 73 while Furci finished in a group in sixth with a 74 followed by a 70.

Fall Recap: Highlighting the Fall schedule was the team title at the John Dallio Memorial on Sept. 27 and 28. Greg Doherty birdied three of his last four holes to come from behind and win the individual title while leading the Blue Demons to the team crown at Ruffled Feathers GC. Doherty fired a three-round total of 217 to finish a stroke ahead of teammate Charles Boucher, Western Illinois' Kyle Peterman and David Byrne from Detroit.

The Match Play concluded the Fall portion of the 2009-10 schedule as the Blue Demons finished fourth among the 11 BIG EAST programs competing. DePaul was eighth of 17 teams at the Adams Cup of Newport, Sept. 21-22 before winning the John Dallio Memorial. The Blue Demons finished sixth of 12 teams at the Xavier Invitational before placing eight of 12 teams at the Georgetown Intercollegiate.

Doherty led the team with a 73.91 stroke average followed by Russell Budd (74.46) and Michael Furci (74.82). Furci posted a pair of top 10 finishes while Russell Budd's 67 in the first round of the Xavier Invitational was the best round of the season.
