Golf Takes 11th Place at ASU Indian Classic



JONESBORO, Ark. Senior Matthew McMahon carded a final round of 68 on Tuesday as the DePaul men’s golf team closed out the Arkansas State Indian Classic.  The Blue Demons placed 11th in the team standings following three rounds of competition at Sage Meadows Golf Club.

McMahon played four shots under par during Tuesday’s final 18 holes as he earned part of an eight-way tie for 16th place in the individual standings.  After opening with rounds of 73 and 70 on Monday, McMahon closed the tournament five shots under par with a season-best total of 211.

Junior Cory Blenkush trailed McMahon by four strokes in the individual standings with a three-round score of 215.  Blenkush carded a final round of 75 after posting rounds of 71 and 69 on Monday.  He tied three other golfers for 41st place.  Junior Nick Martin followed by one stroke as he landed in an eight-way tie for 45th place.  Martin shot a final round of 73 after notching rounds of 73 and 70 on Monday.

Sophomore Greg Doherty tied four other golfers for 56th place as he finished the tournament with a three-round score of 218.  He opened with scores of 71 and 73 and closed with a final round of 74.  Freshman Charles Boucher competed as an individual and earned a tie for 88th place with a score of 288.

Austin Peay State won the team title with a 30-under-par combined score of 834.  Arkansas State followed in second place with a total of 836 and Illinois State took third place with a score of 837.  The Blue Demons posted a four-under-par score of 860 to finish ahead of Missouri State, Jacksonville State, Central Arkansas, Northern Iowa and Stephen F. Austin State.

Tyler Thompson of Arkansas State won the individual crown with a 13-under-par score of 203.

DePaul returns to competition this weekend at the Fighting Illini Spring Invitational.  The tournament runs Saturday and Sunday at Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Illinois.
