Golf Leads Through 18 Holes at Fighting Illini Invitational



URBANA, Ill. The DePaul men’s golf team sits in first place following round one of the Fighting Illini Spring Invitational.  Junior Cory Blenkush tops the individual field entering the final round at Stone Creek Golf Club.  Inclement weather shortened the tournament format from three-rounds to 36-holes.

Saturday’s action saw the golfers complete 27 holes.  The tournament concludes on Sunday with the final nine holes of the second round.

Blenkush battled steady precipitation and frigid temperatures to card a first round of 74.  His two-over-par score leads the field of 59 golfers.  Junior Nick Martin trails Blenkush by one stroke as he rests in a three-way tie for second place with a first-round score of 75. 

Freshman Charles Boucher shares 12th place with two other golfers after carding a first round of 77.  Sophomore Greg Doherty follows in a tie for 15th place with a first round of 78.  Matthew McMahon holds a tie for 42nd place with a score of 83.

Junior Paul Watt competes as an individual and carries a tie for fifth place after opening with a round of 76.

DePaul tops the field of 11 squads with a combined total of 304.  Host Illinois sits in second place with a score of 309.

Sunday’s competition tees off at 8:30 a.m. (CST).
