Golf Gets Ready for BIG EAST Championship
CHICAGO - The Blue Demons travel to Dade City, Fla. for the 2009 BIG EAST Championship. The three-round, three-day tournament runs April 19-21 at the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. The South Course features a par-72, 7,031-yard layout. Lake Jovita and USF are hosting both the men's and women's BIG EAST Championships for the second time since 2006. In a blind draw, the Blue Demons were selected as the No. 2 seed and will be paired with St. John's and Louisville. Following a practice round on Saturday, DePaul's first player will tee off in the first on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. ET. Recapping the 2008 BIG EAST Championship: DePaul finished seventh (905) at the 2008 edition The Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Ky. Greg Doherty was the top finisher for the Blue Demons in a tie for 14th place with a three-round total of 222 (+6). He was followed by Cory Blenkush in a tie for 18th at 224 (+8), Will Cumberland in 32, Matthew McMahon in a group at 33rd and Nick Martin in a tie for 53rd. Cumberland totaled 229 (+13) while McMahon shot a 230 (+14) and Martin carded a 238 (+22). Marquette claimed the team title with a 10-over total of 874. Ted Gray led the Golden Eagles and the field with a five-under total of 221 for the individual title. Last Week: The Blue Demons were busy last week competing at the adidas Hoosier Invitational hosted by Indiana and the Caputo Invitational hosted by Loyola. DePaul finished in a tie for seventh in Bloomington, Ind. out of 16 teams. Cory Blenkush, Michael Furci and Ben Westley were the top finishers in a group at 28th. Individuals Charles Boucher, Charlie Harris, Erik Peterson and Paul Watt competed at the Caputo Invitational in Hawthorn Woods, Ill. The tournament was limited to two rounds due to weather with Boucher finishing in a tie for 17th.
