Blue Demons in Seventh After First Round



DADE CITY, Fla. With three individuals in the top 15, the DePaul golf team is seventh following the first day at the 2009 BIG EAST Championship. The Blue Demons combined for a nine-over score of 297 on day one at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.

Greg Doherty led DePaul with an even-par 72 to finish in a tie for 11th. He was followed by Ben Westley and Nick Martin in 14th, Cory Blenkush in a group at 44th and Michael Furci in a tie for 52nd. Westley and Martin each shot a one-over 73 while Blenkush was seven over at 79 and Furci shot an 81.

The Blue Demons are seventh behind Notre Dame and USF in the fifth slot while Louisville leads following a combined six-under 282 in the first round. DePaul was originally in a tie for fifth, but a scoring change after the first round added two strokes to the team total.

Seton Hall is second with a three-under total of 285 followed by Marquette and St. John’s in third with a four-over 292. Dave Sampson and John Zur of Seton Hall set the bar on the first day at Lake Jovita with identical scores of 69 (-3).

Monday’s second round begins at 8 a.m. ET at Lake Jovita followed by the final round on Tuesday.
