Blenkush Tied for Second at BIG EAST Championship
HEBRON, Ky. The DePaul men’s golf team rests in a tie for eighth place following Sunday’s opening round of the 2008 BIG EAST Conference Championship. Junior Cory Blenkush paces the Blue Demons and holds a tie for second place in the individual standings entering Monday’s second round at Traditions Golf Club.
Blenkush opened the 54-hole tournament with a one-under-par round of 71. He shot par on 13 holes, carded three birdies and posted two bogeys. Blenkush stands three strokes off the lead while sharing second place with three golfers.
Junior Greg Doherty trails Blenkush by one stroke after shooting a 72 during the first round. Two birdies and two bogeys placed Doherty at even par in a four-way tie for sixth place.
Senior Will Cumberland shares 44th place with four golfers after carding a first round score of 79. Senior Matthew McMahon and junior Nick Martin follow in a seven-way tie for 49th place after both Blue Demons opened with a round of 80.
DePaul stands 11 shots off the lead with a team score of 302. Marquette sits atop the team standings with a combined score of 291, while Seton Hall follows in second with a total of 294. Louisville and Notre Dame share third place with identical scores of 296 and St. John’s trails in fifth place with a tally of 300. Cincinnati and Connecticut hold a tie for sixth place with scores of 301 and Georgetown splits eighth place with the Blue Demons. USF, Villanova and Rutgers round out the field with scores of 304, 305 and 307, respectively.
Ted Gray of Marquette holds the individual lead after shooting a first round of 68.
Monday's second round gets underway at 7 a.m. (CST). DePaul’s first tee time is slated for 7:50 a.m.
