Golf Finishes Seventh at BIG EAST Championship



DADE CITY, Fla. DePaul finished strong for a seventh-place spot in the 2009 BIG EAST Championship at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. The Blue Demons started Tuesday’s final round in ninth place and used a team total of 291 to move up on the team standings.

Nick Martin led the team with a top 20 finish in a group at 19th place. Martin posted a three-round total of 221 (+5) that included a one-over 73 in the final round. He was followed by Greg Doherty in a tie for 24th at 222 (+6). Martin opened the tournament with rounds of 73 and 75 while Doherty shot a 72 in the first round before a 76 on Monday and 74 on Tuesday.

Cory Blenkush shot the best round of the tournament for DePaul with a one-under 71 on Tuesday. He finished in a group in 37th place with a three-round total of 227 (+11). Michael Furci joined Blenkush in 37th after two rounds of 73 following an opening-round 81. Ben Westley rounded out the action for the Blue Demons with a tournament total of 232 (+16) to finish in a tie for 48th.

Louisville claimed the team title with a total score of 847 (-17). The Cardinals were followed by Marquette (852), Seton Hall (870), Notre Dame (873) and USF (875) to complete the top five. St. John’s finished in sixth at 19-over (883).

Adam Hadwin of Louisville earned medalist honors for the tournament with a three-day total of 207 (-9). Following Hadwin was Karsten Clements of Louisville, Doug Fortner from Notre Dame and Marquette’s Mike Van Sickle in a tie for second at 210 (-6).

DePaul’s seventh-place showing matches the 2008 finish after the Blue Demons posted their best team finish of fifth in the 2007 BIG EAST Championship.
