Golf Begins BIG EAST Championship on Sunday

CHICAGO -- The DePaul men’s golf team concludes its 2012-13 season at the BIG EAST Championship, April 28-30 at the Reunion Resort in Orlando, Florida.  The 12-team league championship field will tee off at Tom Watson Course beginning on Sunday at 8 a.m. (CT).  

DePaul enters the championship ranked 10th among the 12 BIG EAST programs in the Golfstat rankings. Notre Dame, who has won the last three league championships, ranks third in the BIG EAST, in the Golfstat rankings behind Louisville and USF.  St. John’s and Georgetown round out the top five, while Cincinnati, Villanova, Connecticut, and Marquette are all ranked in front of the Blue Demons.

The three-day, three-round championship starts Sunday with the Blue Demons beginning with an 8:50 a.m. (ET) tee time. DePaul’s fivesome for the conference championship includes Russell Budd, Moritz Ackerhans, John Pavelko, Adrian Halimi and Moritz Hausweiler.

The Blue Demons are coming off their best team performance of the season at the Kemper Sports Spring Invitational, April 15-16. Paced by top 10 finishes by Ackerhans (6th), Budd (t7th) and Pavelko (t9th) the Blue Demons placed fifth out of 14 teams.  St. John’s finished fourth and was just three strokes in front of DePaul, while the Blue Demons were 12-strokes ahead of Marquette, who finished seventh.

Budd paces the Blue Demons with his 75.22 stroke average and has three top 15 finishes this season.  Ackerhans’ averages stands at 76.77, and is coming off a career-low 68 in the third round of the Kemper Sports Spring Invitational.   

The Watson Course at Reunion Resort opened in November 2004 and annually ranks among the top resort courses and the best courses in Florida. It features a par-72 layout over 7,257 yards. Live scoring is available for the entire tournament at

DePaul in the BIG EAST Championship: DePaul's best BIG EAST finish was a fifth-place showing in 2007... the Blue Demons have finished seventh in 2011 (tied), 2009 and 2008 and were eighth in 2006... in 2012, DePaul finished 10th… Michael Furci owns DePaul's top finish with a fifth-place tie in 2010... Greg Doherty holds DePaul's best BIG EAST Championship score with a 2007 tournament total of 214 (-2)... Doherty finished in a tie for eighth in 2007... Maximilian Mayer and Ben Westley each finished in the top 10 in 2011... it marked the first time two DePaul golfer finished in the top 10 at the BIG EAST Championship... Mayer was eighth (220, +7) and Westley finished in a tie for 10th (222, +9)... four DePaul golfers have finished in top 10 with Doherty in 2007 and Furci's showing in 2010.

Noting the Blue Demons: DePaul had three players – Moritz Ackerhans (6th), Russell Budd (t7th) and John Pavelko (t9th) finish in the top 10 at the Kemper Sports Spring Invitational (April 15-16)… DePaul finished fifth out of 14 teams with a score of 890 (+26)… Russell Budd leads DePaul with a 75.22 stroke average and has paced the Blue Demons in five tournaments this season… Budd’s top finish was 11th place at the John Dallio Memorial (Oct. 6-7)… Budd has carded rounds seven rounds of 72 or under… season-best 69 in the final round of the John Dallio Memorial… has six top 40 finishes this season… Adrian Halimi carded a three-round best of 216 at the Spring Break Championship (Fountains Country Club) Mar. 29-31… finished the Spring Break Championship in ninth place… the freshman carded a hole-in-one at the Ram Masters Invitational on Sept. 18… Moritz Ackerhans carded a career-low 68 (-4) in the final round of the Kemper Sports Spring Invitational on April 16… recorded a hole-in-one at the Windon Memorial on Sept. 24… Betty Kaufmann is in her 15th season at the helm of the Blue Demon golf program… the Blue Demons have been crowned the Golf Coaches Association of America Academic National Champions the last three seasons… Budd is a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.
