BIG EAST Men's Golf

CHICAGO - This is the 10th in a series that takes an inside look at the future of DePaul athletics in the BIG EAST Conference.  The BIG EAST, headquartered in Providence, R.I., celebrated its 25th anniversary during the 2003-04 season and moved forward in 2004-05 with the addition of five new members poised to join the league this summer.

On July 1, DePaul University joins the University of Cincinnati, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida as new members of the BIG EAST Conference.  The league membership in 2005-06 includes the five new members joining the University of Connecticut, Georgetown University, University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburgh, Providence College, Rutgers University, St. John’s University, Seton Hall University, Syracuse University, Villanova University and the University of West Virginia.

A Preview of BIG EAST Men’s Golf
The BIG EAST has sponsored a men’s golf championship each year since 1979. St. John’s captured the first team title at the Willimantic Country Club in Connecticut. Matt Zito of Providence was the first individual winner with a two-round score of 142.

The Championship takes place during the spring season. The top six men’s teams in the BIG EAST compete in the 54-hole event. In 2005, the men’s championship outing was held at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., from April 22-24.

The final round of the 2005 BIG EAST Golf Championships was cancelled after Warren Golf Course was deemed unplayable due to poor weather conditions.  With weather also causing the loss of one of Saturday's scheduled two rounds, the 54-hole Championships was forced to be shortened to 18 holes of play.  Notre Dame won its second straight conference crown, and the BIG EAST's automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, by turning in a score of 311 (+31) on Saturday.  In addition to the individual and team award winners, the top seven individual finishers receive all-conference honors.

The league was represented at the 2005 NCAA Championships by record three teams led by Notre Dame.  Rutgers and Boston College also earned at-large bids.  Notre Dame hosted the Central Regional while Rutgers and Boston College competed in the East Regional.
