Doherty Finishes 11th at The Players Amateur
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Greg Doherty continued his summer swing in the Southeast with an 11th-place finish at The Players Amateur this weekend at Belfair Golf Club. He posted a four-round total of 290 and was among the top dozen players throughout the weekend. Doherty opened the tournament strong as weather hampered the first day of action. He carded four birdies in the first 12 holes before a bogey on the 15th and double-bogey on the 18th hole to finish with a one-under score of 71. He finished the tournament with three consecutive rounds of 73 and was tied for fifth following the second day of action. After his 73 in Sunday’s final round, Doherty was among a group of four players at 290 (+2) for 11th place – eight strokes behind winner Bud Cauley. Doherty was tough on the front nine of the par-72 (36-36), 7,080-yard course as he posted three under-par front 9’s in the four days. His four-day front nine totals went 33-35-36-35 (-5) compared to his back 9’s of 38-38-37-38 (+7). Cauley won the tournament with a four-round total of 282 (-6) to finish two strokes ahead of George Bryan IV. Earlier this summer, Doherty played in the North & South Amateur Championship, the Rice Planters Golf Tournament and the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier.
