Freshman Russell Budd Leads the Field After Two Rounds at Xavier Invite
LOVELAND, Ohio - Playing in just his third intercollegiate event, DePaul freshman Russell Budd sits in first place at the Xavier Invitational after two rounds on Monday. He leads the field by one stroke after going seven-under par over the first 36 holes while the Blue Demons as a team sit in fifth after two rounds, but are just 10 strokes out of the lead.
Budd fired a 67 in the first round before coming back in the afternoon with a two-under 70 at Oasis GC. His first-round score marked the low round of the season by a DePaul golfer ahead of Greg Doherty's 68 in the first round of the John Dallio Memorial last week.
He used 10 birdies over the two rounds on Monday and leads Akron's Lucas Murray by a stroke heading into Tuesday's third and final round. His two under-par rounds are the first for the Toronto native while carrying the DePaul bag.
Ben Westley follows Budd on the DePaul leaderboard in a group at 27th place while Doherty is tied for 33rd. Westley carded rounds of 74 and 72 for a total of 146 (+2) while Doherty put together a 75 in the morning followed by a 73 in the afternoon for a 148 (+4).
Charles Boucher and Michael Furci round out the DePaul fivesome with Boucher tied for 54th and Furci at 61st. Boucher totaled 153 (+9) with a 74 and 79 while Furci shot an 85 before coming back with a 72 in the second to finish with 157 (+13).
Akron leads the 12-team field with a first-day total of 567. The Zips lead Marquette by two strokes and host Xavier by six shots. Eastern Kentucky sits one shot ahead of DePaul at fourth with a team score of 576.
The final round of the Xavier Invitational is scheduled for Tuesday morning at Oasis GC.
