Blue Demons Host John Dallio Memorial

CHICAGO – DePaul returns to its home course this weekend for the annual John Dallio Memorial at Ruffled Feathers GC. The Blue Demons welcome 14 teams to Lemont, Ill. for a three-round, two-day event.
Joining DePaul at Ruffled Feathers on Saturday and Sunday are Bradley, Chicago State, Detroit, Drake, Eastern Illinois, Florida Gulf Coast, Green Bay, IUPUI, Loyola-Chicago, Marquette, Missouri, Northern Iowa, SIU-Edwardsville and Western Illinois. Ruffled Feathers features a par-72, 6,898-yard layout and is the home of DePaul golf with an exclusive practice facility for the Blue Demons.
Two rounds are scheduled for Saturday starting at 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by Sunday’s final 18 holes with tee times beginning at 7:21 a.m. DePaul's lineup for the event features Ben Westley, Russell Budd, Moritz Ackerhans, Jan Juelicher and Brad Stephens. John Pavelko, Brad Peterson and Erik Peterson will also compete as individuals this weekend.
John Dallio Memorial History: The annual event is named after for DePaul golfer John Dallio who lost his courageous battle with glioblastoma, a deadly brain tumor on Oct. 6, 2003. A member of the Blue Demons from 1997-2001, Dallio earned a degree from DePaul in finance and worked in the Blue Demon athletics department for two years.
A year ago, IUPUI claimed the team title with a tournament total of 890 (+26) two strokes ahead of Florida Gulf Coast and 11 shots in front of Detroit. Ben Engle of IUPUI finished the tournament as the lone player under par to win medalist honors. Engle compiled a two-under score of 214 to finish four strokes ahead Oakland's Jakob Ziegler. DePaul finished eighth with Russell Budd in a tie for 12th followed by Ben Westley in a group in 14th place and Charles Boucher in a tie for 17th.
Noting the Blue Demons: Russell Budd leads the team with a 72.20 scoring average followed by Ben Westley at 72.80… Westley is the top returner after posting a scoring average of 74.57 last season... three players have posted rounds of less than 70 this season… Budd, Westley and Jan Juelicher have reach recorded a round of 69… Moritz Ackerhans posted the top 18-hole score a year ago with a 69 on two occasions...at the 2011 BIG EAST Championship, DePaul placed two in the top 10 for the first time in program history... Maximilian Mayer finished in eighth and Ben Westley was tied for 10th.
Budd Records Hole-in-One: DePaul junior Russell Budd drilled a hole-in-one on the eighth hole at the Cardinal Club on a rain-shortened first day of the Cardinal Collegiate on Sept. 26. The shotgun start started Budd on the seventh hole and he nailed his hole-in-one on the 166-yard eighth hole.
Westley Earns Award at Adams Cup: Following the completion of the Adams Cup of Newport, senior golfer Ben Westley was named the recipient of the Robert Adams Exemplary Golfer Award. The award is presented each year at the Adams Cup of Newport.
The Robert Adams Exemplary Golfer Award is given to the player that best exemplifies Mr. Adams’ commitment to athletics, academics, citizenship and community service. Westley was nominated by DePaul coach Betty Kaufmann prior to the tournament.
Westley was DePaul’s top player last season and is a standout on and off the course. The senior has played in every event during his career and is a two-time team captain. His community service work includes partnering with the First Tee programs in Chicago and in the summers in Minnesota and also spending time with the Hook a Kid program, Miscericordia and the Ronald McDonald house. Westley also carries a 3.7 cumulative grade-point average as a member of the nation’s top academic golf program the last two seasons.
Academic Success is a First in Nation: Over the last two seasons, the Blue Demons have compiled to top team grade-point average in the nation according to the Golf Coaches Association of America. DePaul is the first program to earn the Academic National Champion award in back-to-back seasons. The 2009-10 team posted a cumulative GPA of 3.66 before the 2010-11 squad led the country with an indentical 3.66 team GPA.
Looking Back: Adams Cup of Newport (Sept. 19-20) – DePaul finished 11th among the 19 teams competing... Russell Budd was the top finisher in a tie for 23rd (220, +5)... Ben Westley and Jan Juelicher each fired a 69 in a round. Cardinal Collegiate (Sept. 26-27) – Russell Budd (4th – 141, -3) and Ben Westley (t6th – 143, -1) finished in the top 10… Budd recorded a hole-in-one on the eighth hole… the first round was rained out and the tournament shortened to 36 holes… the Blue Demons finished in a tie for fourth among the 18 teams.
Looking Ahead: Following the John Dallio Memorial, the Blue Demons conclude the Fall portion of the schedule at the Georgetown Intercollegiate on Oct. 17-18. The Spring schedule starts on Feb. 13 with The Match Play in Orlando, Fla.
