CHICAGO - The Blue Demons head to the nation's capital for the 26th annual Georgetown Intercollegiate. DePaul is one of a dozen teams competing at the event.
Joining host Georgetown for the three-round, two-day tournament is Campbell, DePaul, Detroit, Eastern Michigan, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), UNC-Greensboro, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, William & Mary and Xavier.
The action starts Monday at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start for 36 holes. Play concludes on Tuesday with 18 holes. The 54-hole tournament will be held at the Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md. The course is 7,100 yards, and par 72.
UNC-Greensboro won last year's tournament, coming back from an 11-shot deficit and finishing with an 18-over par 586, three strokes ahead of Washington State. The Blue Demons finished in eighth place led by Greg Doherty in a tie for fifth place.
DePaul's lineup for this week's tournament includes Ben Westley, Charles Boucher, Maximilian Mayer, John Pavelko and Mark Sanchez.
Noting the Blue Demons: Junior Ben Westley leads the team with a 74.67 scoring average... he is followed by senior Charles Boucher at 76.33 and sophomore Russell Budd with a 76.44 stroke average... Boucher is the lone senior on the roster... six of the nine members of the roster are either freshmen or sophomores... Budd's score of 70 in the first round of the Cardinal Collegiate is the low score of the season... he also held the best round of the season a year ago with a 67 in the first round of the Xavier Invitational... Budd has recorded four career rounds of 70 or better in 13 career events... Budd and Westley each have two top 25 finishes in three tournaments this season... Boucher has recorded one top 25 finish.
Fall Review: Cardinal Collegiate (Sept. 20-21) - DePaul opened the season with a 12th-place finish... Russell Budd was the top finisher in a group in 12th place... he posted a tournament total of 216 (E)... Budd opened the tournament with a two-under 70. John Dallio Memorial (Sept. 25-26) - The Blue Demons finished eighth at Ruffled Feathers GC... Russell Budd (t12th), Ben Westley (t14th) and Charles Boucher (t17th) each finished in the top 20. D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate (Oct. 2-3) - DePaul finished 17th among the 18 teams competing... Ben Westley was the top finisher in a tie for 13th... he totaled 225 (+12) in the three rounds.
Looking Ahead: DePaul plays in three October events to conclude the fall schedule starting at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate. That tournament is hosted by Illinois State on Oct. 2-3. Following the Weibring, DePaul heads to the nation's capital for the Georgetown Intercollegiate, Oct. 18-19, and concludes the autumn swing in Simi Valley, Calif., on Oct. 25-26 at the Bill Cullum Invitational.
