Golf Earns Second Place at BIG EAST-MAC Challenge
ORLANDO, Fla. Senior Matthew McMahon took second place among all individuals as the DePaul men’s golf team closed out the BIG EAST-MAC Challenge on Sunday. The Blue Demons placed second in the team standings following three rounds of competition at the Grand Cypress Golf Club. McMahon carded a final round of 71 on Sunday after shooting rounds of 72 and 71 on Saturday. His three-round total of 214 put him two shots under par for the tournament and eight shots behind medalist Mike Van Sickle of Marquette. Senior Will Cumberland shot rounds of 73, 71 and 73 for a 54-hole score of 217. He finished one stroke over par and tied two other golfers for third place. Sophomore Greg Doherty followed in 11th place after posting scores of 76, 71 and 75 for a total of 222. Junior Nick Martin trailed Doherty by one stroke and earned a tie for 12th place with rounds of 77, 73 and 73. Every Blue Demon golfer finished in the top 20 as junior Cory Blenkush rounded out DePaul’s showing with a tie for 19th place. He carded scores of 74, 77 and 73 and finished with an eight-over-par total of 224. The Blue Demons combined for a score of 871, while Marquette topped the field of 11 teams with a total of 866. DePaul edged third-place finisher Bowling Green State by 10 strokes. The BIG EAST-MAC Challenge marks the conclusion of DePaul’s fall tournament schedule.
