Golf Defeats USF Before Falling to Louisville at The Match Play
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - The DePaul golf team posted a win and a loss in two matches on the second day of The Match Play in Southern Pines, N.C. The Match Play features 11 of the 12 BIG EAST golf programs in a tournament-style format. DePaul was seeded third and received a first-round bye on Friday afternoon. With six points on the line for each match, the Blue Demons secured 3.5 points to knock off USF in Saturday morning's second round. DePaul posted a 3.5-2.5 win over the Bulls with wins by Greg Doherty, Russell Budd and Michael Furci. Charles Boucher earned the half point in his match before Furci posted 3-and-1 win followed by Budd's 1-Up victory and Doherty's 2-and-1 decision for the deciding point. Saturday afternoon's semifinals saw DePaul taking on Louisville. The Cardinals secured 4.5 points to 1.5 for the Blue Demons as Boucher collected another half point and Ben Westley won his match with a 1-Up victory. DePaul faces Connecticut in the third-place match on Sunday morning. The Blue Demons and Huskies tee off at 7:50 a.m. ET. Connecticut garnered just a half-point in its semifinal match against Notre Dame. The Irish and Louisville duel in the championship match.
