CHICAGO - The DePaul men's soccer team opened its 2017 season at home on Sunday afternoon in an exhibition match against Western Michigan. While the Blue Demons held a 1-0 for the first 85 minutes of the contest, the Broncos rallied to tie the match at 1-1, forcing penalty kicks. Down the stretch, WMU outscored DePaul 4-2 in penalty kicks to take the win.
"It was a fantastic atmosphere this afternoon at Wish Field," said head coach Craig Blazer. "The day provided us with a lot of valuable information for us to build on, grow from, and to become a sound unit. Our effort was great, and we were able to demonstrate a sense of style and rhythm with just five days as a group. We look forward to our next match against Western Illinois on Saturday."
A defensive battle kept the match scoreless at the half. After intermission, the Blue Demons counter-attacked WMU's backline and forced three early shots in the opening minutes of the second half.
DePaul continued its pressure that caused a Bronco defender to foul midfielder Phillipp Konigstein, setting up a free kick from 25 yards out. Konigstein's shot curved around Western Michigan's four-man wall and into the lower right-hand corner of the net to put the Blue Demons on top 1-0.
In the 79th minute, DePaul's reserve keeper, Trevor Wilson, made a diving save on a point blank shot by WMU's Kosti Moni to keep the Blue Demons in the lead.
With just over four minutes remaining in regulation, Western Michigan tied the match at 1-1 with a quick flip by Anthony Bowie.
Regulation ended with a 1-1 tie.
The exhibition match went straight to penalty kicks to decide the victor where the Broncos edged the Blue Demons 4-2. Both sides made their first two penalty kick attempts, moving to the third player. WMU's McIntosh netted the Broncos' third shot while the Western Michigan reserve goalkeeper, Elijah Michaels, deflected Konigstein's right-footed shot.
WMU's Moni found redemption from his point-blank shot in the final minutes of the second half that was deflected by Wilson and gave the Broncos a 4-2 edge, pushing all the pressure to DePaul's Sasa Labovic to extend the shootout to the fifth attempt. Labovic's kick sailed wide, giving the Broncos the victory.
DePaul returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 19 when the Blue Demons host Western Illinois in their final preseason exhibition match at 1:00 p.m.
DePaul opens the 2017 regular season in Dekalb, Ill, against Northern Illinois on Friday, Aug. 25 before returning to Wish Field for its home opener on Sept. 1 against La Salle (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m.
