CHICAGO - In its final preseason exhibition tune up prior to the start of the 2017 season, the DePaul men's soccer team used three second half goals to defeat Western Illinois 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The match was a defensive battle through the first half that carried a scoreless contest into the intermission.
Western Illinois broke the silence in the 57th minute, capitalizing on a ricocheted block inside the box to take a 1-0 advantage. WIU's Paul Kirdorf made two quick attempts at the frame as DePaul defender Anton Sell blocked the first one. The bounce back landed at Kirdorf's feet, allowing him to fire off a second shot for the Leathernecks' lone lead of the contest.
The Blue Demons would tie the match at 1-1 six minutes later when midfielder Harry Hilling received a cross from defender Max de Bruijne from the left side of the 18 and made a right-footed blast to the lower right-hand corner of the net.
Three minutes later, freshman Timmy Iscra netted the game-winning goal on a header to the upper left corner. Iscra made a run to the top of the box and received a cross from sophomore defender Joshua Bowser, allowing the attempt to soar just past the WIU keeper's outstretched reach.
DePaul received an insurance goal in the 84th minute as Stijn van der Slot lifted a right-footed boot to the lower right corner of the net off a through touch by midfielder Istvan Wilhelms.
"We had some great looks in the second half, and our guys started to mesh and take strategic runs at the net," said head coach Craig Blazer. "It was great seeing our newcomers step up today and the veteran leadership carry us through. We are starting to find our identity and will use this week to prepare for our season opener on Friday."
The Blue Demons will open the 2017 regular season on the road against Northern Illinois (Aug. 25) and UIC (Aug. 27) before returning to Wish Field for their home opener on Friday, Sept. 1. DePaul will face La Salle (Sept. 1) and Valparaiso (Sept. 3) as a site host of Loyola's North Shore Chicago Classic.
Season tickets are on sale now for $30 and can be purchased by contacting the DePaul Ticket Office at 773-325-7526.
