Mangan Heads DePaul in the Right Direction
Sept. 5, 2010
CHICAGO - First came the loss in the season-opener.
Then came a tie in game two.
The natural progression would tell you it was time for DePaul to put up a "W."
That's precisely what happened Sunday at Wish Field as the Blue Demons defeated Florida International 1-0.
One of Mangan's specialties is an accurate header, and that's exactly what he executed to put the Blue Demons ahead 1-0.
The Blue Demons had an excellent chance to score in the 17th minute when Antonio Aguilar fired a left-footed strike that FIU goalkeeper Shane Lopez deflected.
There was Mangan, Johnny-on-the-spot, with a rebound attempt that was blocked by the Golden Panthers defense.
In the 37th minute, Aguilar had another chance to score, followed up by freshman Stephen Korosis' rebound attempt---but again Lopez was up to the challenge.
DePaul owned the run of play in the first half and launched 10 shots at the Golden Panther goal to only two for FIU.
Florida International's best opportunity in the first half came on a shot that deflected off the post.
FIU (1-1) came on strong in the second half and outshot DePaul 7-2.
But the Blue Demon defense and goalkeeper Joe Ferrari made Mangan's goal stand up. That evened DePaul's record to 1-1-1.
DePaul's' next match is Saturday when they travel to Creighton.
