CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s soccer team was edged in the closing minutes of Saturday’s BIG EAST home opener versus No. 16 Georgetown 2-1 after carrying an early 1-0 lead.

The Blue Demons (3-5-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) jumped ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute with a Stijn van der Slot penalty kick. Istvan Wilhelms earned the penalty for the Blue Demons when he was knocked off his feet by the Georgetown goalkeeper inside the box as he was charging toward the goal.

In the 37th minute, the Blue Demons narrowly missed an opportunity to take a 2-0 lead off a touch by Wilhelms. Dealing with a bouncing ball atop the box, the freshman struck the ball back post with the outside of his right foot, sending the Georgetown keeper sprawling for the save.

The Hoyas tied the match at 1-1 just three minutes before the intermission.  In the 42nd minute, Dylan Nealis played the ball across the goal box where it found Derek Dodson front post who tapped it home for his first goal of the match.

In the 60th minute, DePaul threatened to pull ahead as a header by Max de Bruijne nicked off the right post.

Georgetown (6-1-1, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) broke the tie in the 88th minute with Dodson’s second goal of the match. Attacking up the left wing, Declan McCabe scooted across the box to find Dodson near post who tapped home the game-winner for the Hoyas.

Zach El-Shafei and van der Slot led the Blue Demons with three shots apiece during the match.
