CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s soccer team captured its first BIG EAST win of 2017 on Saturday as the Blue Demons defeated Villanova 1-0 at Wish Field.
The match started off in a stalemate as both teams had scoring opportunities in the opening frame but neither could find the back of the net.

The Blue Demons (4-5-1-, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) had their first opportunity in the early minutes of the contest when midfielder Zach El-Shafei lifted a cross from the right side of the pitch to the far post where Bryan Simons’ header rolled just over the crossbar.
Villanova (5-5-0, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) recorded its best chance of the opening half in the 38th minute when Lucas Hodges tapped the ball to Zach Zandi on a runner and then received the give-and-go touch back from Zandi where his right-footed attempt nicked the right corner of the crossbar, leaving the match scoreless at the intermission.
In the 74th minute, the Blue Demons made their move. There was a quick touch by midfielder Istvan Wilhelms to Joshua Bowser who kicked a cross from just outside of the 18 to the middle of the box where forward Stijn van der Slot connected with a header that found the top left corner of the net, recording his fourth goal of the season.  The strike would become DePaul’s game-winner as the Blue Demons captured their first BIG EAST victory of 2017.
In the closing minutes of the contest, Villanova had several key opportunities for the equalizer, but DePaul’s defensive backline held strong and walked away with their second shutout of the season.
DePaul will now hit the road to South Orange, N.J., to face Seton Hall on Oct. 7 before returning to Wish Field on Oct. 11 to face crosstown rival Northwestern at 3 p.m.
