DePaul's 2-0 Loss at Butler Snaps Five-Game Unbeaten Streak
Oct. 5, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - DePaul got a close-up look at the BIG EAST Conference's leading individual scorer Saturday night starring on the league's highest-scoring team.
The Blue Demons came away with a 2-0 loss that snapped their five-game unbeaten streak. It was the first time DePaul (4-5-2, 0-1-1) has not scored in a game since a 0-0 double-overtime tie Sept. 17 at Drake.
This was only the third time this season the Blue Demons had not found the back of the net. They came into Saturday's match No. 22 in the nation in total goals.
Butler (8-2-1, 2-0-0) scored on its second shot of the game in the 13th minute when David Goldsmith found the net with a shot that deflected off the far post after an entry from Austin Oldham.
In the 22nd minute, Goldsmith struck again. The talented freshman from Bristol, England connected on a blast from 20 yards on the right side after a pass from Jordan Burt.
That was Goldsmith's ninth goal of the season and the Bulldogs' 21st overall.
"We faced a nationally ranked team at their place, and they were on us right from the start," said DePaul coach Craig Blazer. "We had opportunities to score in the second half but weren't able to connect.
"Butler's two forwards (Goldsmith and Zach Steinberger) are good. There's a reason why Butler is ranked, and those two outstanding players have a lot to do with it.
"We were able to identify where we need to improve and will address that this week in training."
DePaul returns home to take on Xavier at noon Wednesday in a BIG EAST match at Wish Field.
