Megally's First Career Goal Not Enough for DePaul on Saturday
Oct. 19, 2013
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Simon Megally found the back of the net for DePaul on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to overcome a tough five-minute stretch in the second half.
Giving up two goals in that span of the second half resulted in a 3-1 BIG EAST Conference loss against Seton Hall at Carroll Field.
Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, DePaul was victimized by an own goal in the 53rd minute.
In the 58th minute, George Velasquez chipped in a shot from the right side over Blue Demon goalkeeper Eric Sorby for his second goal of the match. Max Garcia was credited with his second assist on the day.
Megally's first collegiate goal in the 79th minute from 20 yards snapped a three-game scoreless streak for the Blue Demons.
Seton Hall (6-6-2, 2-3-0 in the BIG EAST) took nine of the game's first 10 shots and converted in the 11th minute. Velasquez took a pass from Garcia and found the upper 90 from 10 yards out.
In the 25th minute, Garcia lined up for a penalty kick---only to have DePaul goalkeeper Eric Sorby spoil his attempt with a brilliant save.
"The last 20 minutes of the first half found us in really good form," said DePaul coach Craig Blazer. "Being down 1-0, we were still in good shape for the second half and our team was ready for the challenge of tying the game.
"Unfortunately, the own goal set us back. But I want to commend our guys for continuing the fight and congratulations to Simon on finding his first goal.
"I also want to commend Sorby on playing with an injury. Playing hurt, he made a great save on that penalty kick."
The loss left DePaul at 4-8-2 on the season and 0-4-1 in the BIG EAST.
"The guys know everybody needs to do a little bit more inside the defensive 18 and the attacking 18," Blazer said. "It's difficult to do in the BIG EAST, but that's our challenge."
The Blue Demons are back on the road for a 2 p.m. match Wednesday at Georgetown.
