Blue Demons Help Kick Off Chicago Cup 2010
CHICAGO - DePaul will liven up its men's soccer spring season when the Blue Demons head to Evanston on April 25 to compete in the Chicago Cup 2010.
DePaul draws Loyola in the 12:45 p.m. game, right after host Northwestern tackles Illinois-Chicago in the event's opening match at 11:30 a.m.
The losers will meet at 2 p.m. in the third-place game while the winners square off at 3:15 in the championship game.
DePaul is coming off an 8-9-3 season that saw the Blue Demons qualify for the BIG EAST Championship tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
The Blue Demons upset Georgetown in the first round on penalty kicks and fell to then-No. 5 Louisville on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.
DePaul's Chicago Cup opponent Loyola finished 4-8-4 last fall, 1-5-2 in the Horizon League (last place). The Blue Demons and Ramblers battled to a 2-2 tie on Oct. 14 at Loyola Soccer Park.
Northwestern was 11-5-4, 3-2-1 in the Big Ten last season and topped Notre Dame 3-1 in its NCAA tournament opener. The Wildcats came up short 1-0 to then-No. 11 Tulsa in the second round.
The Blue Demons upset Northwestern 2-1 on Sept. 7 on goals by Steffen Vroom and Alex Mangan. Northwestern was ranked No. 8 in the nation at the time.
UIC finished 6-6-7, 3-3-2 in the Horizon League (fifth place). UIC flamed out in the Horizon League quarterfinals, losing to Cleveland State on penalty kicks.
