CHICAGO - They gathered together at Lakeside Field on Northwestern's campus to once again suit up for DePaul and looking to find the back of the net.

Blue Demon soccer alumni were reunited at the Seventh Annual Alumni Cup Soccer Championship on June 7---just five days before the start of the FIFA World Cup---and the group included recent graduates such as Jared Blincow, Kyle Gustafson and Cale Hartle.

It was a terrific and fun opportunity for the former student-athletes to stoke their competitive fire, relive past glories and reconnect with ex-teammates and fellow soccer alumni.

"College soccer in the Chicago area continues to develop, and this annual alumni event grows bigger every year," said DePaul soccer coach Craig Blazer.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for ex-college soccer players who want to continue playing the sport they love. It's great to see the significance college soccer has when it comes to influencing people's lives.

"Collegiate soccer is becoming more significant, and each time you have an event like this, it is growing our sport. This tournament has grown to 12 teams now."

Along with DePaul, past participants in the Alumni Cup include Northwestern, Marquette, Indiana, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Butler, Xavier, Bradley, Northern Illinois, Wheaton College, Beloit College and Washington (St. Louis).

Blazer strives to maintain a tight connection with the Blue Demon alumni.

"It's a very positive network and something we communicate to potential DePaul soccer players," Blazer said. "There are some very influential and successful businessmen and executives in our alumni base who are looking to give back to the Blue Demon program and help out our graduates.

"We have developed a very positive alumni network, and once you're in a college soccer family---it's like you're in it for life. We're doing things in Chicago to help make college soccer relevant. Having an MLS (Major League Soccer) team in the Fire and four Division I schools really makes us unique.

"Even so, we're still in the infancy stage of developing our sport. There are more things down the road that are going to help grow DePaul soccer and the sport overall."

Blazer noted two dates for soccer alumni and Blue Demon fans to mark on the calendar. There's the DePaul Intra-squad Game and Alumni/Family Day event on Aug. 16 and BIG EAST Alumni Day on Oct. 11.
