CHICAGO – DePaul men’s soccer coach Craig Blazer announced the 2006 schedule for the program’s second season of BIG EAST Conference play. The Blue Demons open the campaign with a pair of exhibition matches before taking on the 18-match regular-season slate. DePaul hosts nine regular-season matches at Wish Field, including six in BIG EAST play.
“Our 2006 schedule is quite impressive as we begin our second season in the BIG EAST Conference,” said Blazer. “We play four teams that qualified for the 2005 NCAA Tournament and three of these games: West Virginia, South Florida, and St. John’s will be played on campus at Wish Field. The opportunity to play the premier teams in the country is what attracted so many of our players to DePaul. We also are very excited for our local games against Valparaiso, Loyola, UIC, and Northwestern. Every game will be demanding and require a quality team effort to be successful. We look forward to representing DePaul University in our 25th season at the 2006 BIG EAST Conference Tournament.”
DePaul takes on Northern Illinois and Western Michigan in a pair of exhibition matches before opening the season at Valparaiso on Aug. 25. The Northern Illinois warmup is set for Aug. 15 at Wish Field followed by a preseason match with the Broncos in Kalamazoo on Aug. 20. The first regular-season home match sees neighborhood foe Loyola-Chicago make the short trip south to Lincoln Park on Aug. 27. Three days later, the Blue Demons venture down Halsted Ave. for a Wednesday night match at Illinois-Chicago.
Labor Day weekend has the Blue Demons in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the Xavier Tournament. DePaul plays the host Musketeers on Sept. 1 followed by a Sept. 3 match against Marshall of Conference USA. Blazer returns to his alma mater after playing there from 1987-90.
DePaul jumps into BIG EAST action the following weekend as they travel to Marquette on Sept. 8 and Notre Dame on Sept. 10. A three-match homestand follows with Pittsburgh and West Virginia on the weekend of Sept. 15 and a non-conference match against Northwestern on Sept. 20. September concludes with a Sept. 24 game at Rutgers and home matches against USF on Sept. 27 and Villanova on Sept. 30.
The final month of the regular-season has the Blue Demons playing three of five matches at Wish Field. DePaul opens at Louisville on Oct. 7 before hosting Western Kentucky on the 10th, St. John’s on Oct. 14 and Cincinnati on Oct. 18. DePaul travels to Syracuse on Oct. 21 in the regular-season finale. The 2006 BIG EAST Championship begins with first round matches on Oct. 24 and concludes with the semifinals on Nov. 3 and championship on Nov. 5 in Piscataway, N.J.
