DePaul Men's Soccer Alumni Family Day Set for Saturday
Aug. 11, 2014
CHICAGO – A preview of the upcoming season will mix in with tradition and history in Saturday’s DePaul Men’s Soccer Alumni Family Day at Wish Field.
The event kicks off with an intra-squad game at 1 p.m. followed by a clinic for children of soccer alumni. It culminates with an alumni game at 3:30 p.m. that will feature illustrious soccer alumnus Jack Cummins.
“I played in the first game on the renovated Wish Field and got the first assist on the new field,” said Cummins, who graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1988 and earned a DePaul law degree four years later. “I am playing in the alumni game on Saturday. Would I like to get the first assist on the this newly renovated field? I’m just glad that I can still play.
“Stephen Anthony and I were the first men’s soccer letter-winners at DePaul. I went from a freshman walk-on to earning a scholarship as a sophomore and becoming team captain as a senior.
“Soccer was still evolving in the early 1980s. My high school, Geneva, didn’t even have a soccer team. Instead, I played with club teams and on men’s travel teams. I was fortunate to make the DePaul team---not bad for a guy who didn’t play high school soccer.”
Soccer taught Cummins about perseverance, hard work, tenacity and teamwork. All those qualities helped him become an entrepreneur who started, built up and sold a number of businesses. He has been a founder, chief financial officer, general counsel, chief operating officer and a director for many highly successful companies.
He concentrates his practice in business advising, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and intellectual property protection. His clients are primarily technology and health-care companies, licensed professionals, and entrepreneurs. He has represented clients from Fortune 500 companies, shareholders of public and private corporations and emerging companies and entrepreneurs.
Cummins has served as President of the DePaul Alumni Association, Chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the university’s College of Law and Vice Chair of the Advisory Board for the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center at DePaul. He was also Chairman of the Athletics Advisory Council for DePaul Athletics and has been actively involved in fundraising campaigns for Wish Field and McGrath-Phillips Arena. His dedication has resulted in three endowed scholarships for men’s soccer.
He has been honored with the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award by the DePaul University College of Law and also the Rev. John T. Richardson, C.M. Award for outstanding contributions to DePaul University Athletics.
“I’ve formed lifelong friendships with a lot of my teammates and have kept in touch with most of them,” said Cummins, who played from 1984-87 and is 23rd all-time in career points. “Not a week goes by when I’m not texting or e-mailing my former teammates.
“Jeanne (Athletics Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto) and I talked in the early 2000s about bringing back alumni for all sports. Bringing people back home is what it’s all about. They realize DePaul will be here for them for the rest of their lives.”
DePaul soccer coach Craig Blazer is fired up for Saturday’s event.
“While looking forward to the start of the season, we realize how important our alumni have been to the program,” said Blazer as his team opens preseason training on Wednesday. “We’d like to get them back on campus early to meet our new soccer players and interact with them.
“The alumni also get a chance to play on the new field turf that was recently installed on Wish Field. Our field is in awesome shape.
“Their support is so vital to the men’s soccer program, and we’re hoping they will help us in our goal to sell 100 ticket packages.”
