DePaul Opens at Wish Field on Friday
Aug. 23, 2012
CHICAGO – Following its first victory of the preseason—a 1-0 win over Milwaukee—the DePaul men’s soccer team is set to open up the 2012 season on Friday as it hosts cross-town rival UIC for a 1 p.m. matchup at Wish Field.
The Blue Demons, who finished tied for fifth in the BIG EAST Conference last season, are hoping to open the coming season on a high note. Newcomer Michael Kozielek and 2011 BIG EAST All-Rookie Team member David Selvaggi have combined several times this preseason to spark the offense and DePaul hopes that chemistry will continue.
In exhibition action, DePaul opened with a 2-2 draw at Big Ten Conference opponent Michigan. In that contest, Kozielek set up Selvaggi for the Blue Demons’ first goal before Antonio Aguilar converted a penalty kick to knot the game at two.
In their second match, the Blue Demons were tripped up by Northern Illinois in a 1-0 loss but DePaul rebounded in their third and final preseason contest.
At UW-Milwaukee, DePaul put forth a strong defensive effort to seal a 1-0 shutout of its own. On a corner kick in the 59th minute, sophomore defender Curtis Weir bent the expected service into the back of the net to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 advantage and the win.
Following DePaul’s match on Friday against the Flames, the Blue Demon women’s squad takes on Ohio at 4 p.m. The DePaul men return to Wish Field on Wednesday, August 29, when they welcome Western Illinois at noon.
