Ganancio Named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Aug. 27, 2012
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After netting both goals in the DePaul men’s soccer team’s 2-1 win over cross-town rival UIC, sophomore Thiago Ganancio was named the BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.
Notre Dame’s Andrew O’Malley took home the Defensive Player of the Week nod while Rutgers’ Kevin McMullen was tabbed as Goalkeeper of the Week and Mitchell Taintor earned Rookie of the Week accolades.
Ganancio, who played 81 minutes for the Blue Demons in Friday’s match, notched his first goal in the 63rd minute after connecting on passes from fellow sophomore David Selvaggi and junior Zach Forbes.
When the Flames drew even in the 71st minute, Ganancio again stepped up for DePaul. As regulation drew to a close, Ganancio saw his opportunity. After a Flames defender failed to get enough behind a pass to his goalkeeper in the 88th minute, Ganancio added a timely finish to seal the win for the Blue Demons.
With his two-goal effort, Ganancio leads the BIG EAST in goals and points as of Monday.
The honor is the first of Ganancio’s career and is DePaul’s first Offensive Player of the Week award since senior Antonio Aguilar earned the nod following the 2011 season-opener.
The Blue Demons return to Wish Field on Wednesday afternoon as they welcome Western Illinois at noon. DePaul then hosts Western Michigan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
