Men's Soccer Hosts Drake

CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s soccer team hosts the Drake Bulldogs in their first home match of the 2003 season.  The Blue Demons stand at 1-1-0 while Drake enters the game at a perfect 2-0-0.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and is the first half of a DePaul soccer extravaganza as the women’s team takes on Toledo at 4 p.m.

Looking at the Blue Demons

Last weekend in Evanston at the North Shore Classic, DePaul split a pair of matches.  They lost in the opener to Evansville, 1-0, before turning the tables on Vanderbilt by the identical 1-0 score.

Luke Rojo scored the gamewinner against the Commodores with a shot into the upper right corner off a Patrick Vyncke cross in the second half.  Rojo was joined in the All-Tournament team Jonathan Foley and John Partyka.

Bulldog Bits

The Drake Bulldogs enter the match at 2-0-0 after knocking off Grand View and Western Illinois last weekend.  Jesse Baker leads the club with six points on a goal and four assists while Besmir Boga is the lone Bulldog with two goals through two games.  Head coach Sean Holmes in his sixth season at Drake and holds a 34-53-5 record.

Make a Wish

A year ago, DePaul’s six home victories was the most since the club won a school-record six during the 1994 season.  Overall, the 1994 club was 12-5-1 while the 2002 squad went 8-9-2.  In 1986, the Blue Demons posted a home record of 5-5-0.  The 2002 six-match home winning streak was the longest in program history.  The previous record was a four-match string that ended the 1994 season with two wins and started the 1995 campaign with a pair of home victories.  After dropping the final home match last season, the club looks to start a new streak in 2003.

What’s Ahead

The Blue Demons return to Evanston for their second tournament of the season at Northwestern next weekend.  DePaul plays Lafayette on Friday at the Abbott Sports Complex before taking on host Northwestern in the Lakefront Classic.

After a match in Rogers Park on Sept. 23 against Loyola-Chicago, the Blue Demons return to Wish Field for four consecutive home matches.  The club opens the homestand with Illinois-Chicago on Sept. 27 and follow with matches against Northern Illinois, Louisville and Saint Louis at Wish Field.
