Blue Demons to Take on Cougars Under Friday Night Lights
*denotes record as of September 6
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – After opening the season with three-straight one-goal games, the DePaul men’s soccer team looks to get back on top as it heads to Edwardsville, Ill., to take on the SIUE Cougars on Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
The Cougars have also played in their fair share of one-goal games so far this season, as three of their first four were decided by a single tally. SIUE enters Friday’s contest with a 3-1 record and with 30 votes in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 Poll. After three wins to open the season, the Cougars fell for the first time on Sunday, suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of 2010 national champion and No. 6 Akron.
Last season, DePaul welcomed SIUE to Wish Field for an early September matchup. In that contest, the Cougars defeated the Blue Demons 2-1 in front of a crowd of over 700. It was only the second time the two teams met since 1991. That year, SIUE came away with a 1-0 win.
After opening the season with a thrilling 2-1 victory over cross-town rival Illinois-Chicago, DePaul fell victim to two straight heartbreakers. On August 29, the Blue Demons dropped a 2-1 contest to Western Illinois. On September 1, an unlucky goal gave Western Michigan a 1-0 shutout win over DePaul to drop the Blue Demons to 1-2 on the season.
Sophomore Thiago Ganancio has been an offensive threat for DePaul so far this year as he has racked up two goals. Freshman Brian Hindle netted the Blue Demons’ other tally this season while sophomore David Selvaggi leads DePaul in helpers with two.
