Men's Soccer Posts Second Straight Victory
CHICAGO – A goal early by Alex Mangan and a goal late by Julian Chill put DePaul over visiting UW-Green Bay, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at Wish Field. Mangan scored in the seventh minute while Chill added the insurance score in the 89th minute.
DePaul (2-0-0) didn't waste any time in finding the net as Mangan scored on a low liner. Eric Hermosillo set up the goal from the top as the fed Mangan on the right flank. Mangan beat a defender and rifled his shot just inside the left post at 6:08.
The two teams played even over the remainder of the first half with the Blue Demons taking five shots compared to four for the Phoenix.
Just as the ball kicked off to start the second half, the skies opened for continuous rain over the next 35 minutes of action. As the two teams battled each other and collectively battled the rain, neither side was able to generate solid scoring opportunities.
With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Green Bay (1-2-0) generated their best scoring chance of the afternoon as Tosaint Ricketts found himself open from 15 yards. However, his shot from the right side sailed over the crossbar.
DePaul keeper Brian Visser totaled three saves and earned his second shutout in as many games. The junior keeper needs just one more shutout to tie DePaul's career record of 10 blankings.
The Blue Demons close the weekend on Sunday with an afternoon match against Xavier. Kickoff at Wish Field is set for 1 p.m.
