Men's Soccer Falls to Penn

MILWAUKEE, Wis. Penn scored two second-half goals for a 2-0 decision over the DePaul men’s soccer team on Sunday in the Marquette Invitational. The Blue Demons had opportunities with a dozen shots, but were unable to find the net. The Blue Demons finished in second place with three points behind Penn with four points. Willy Lara, John Kornfeld and Steffen Vroom were named to the Marquette Invitational All-Tournament Team.

After a scoreless first half, the Quakers got on the board in the 49th minute when Omid Shokoufandeh scored on an assist from Kevin Unger. Unger fed Shokoufandeh and he scored his first goal of the season from seven yards.

DePaul (1-2-0) came up on the short end of two scoring chances later in the period when John Kornfeld’s penalty kick was saved by Penn’s Drew Healy in the 63rd minute and a shot by Peter Sterbenz in the 78th minute hit the crossbar.

Penn (1-0-1) added an insurance goal at 85:10 when Andrew Ferry fed Christian Barreiro on a two-v-one with DePaul keeper Brian Visser. Barreiro tapped in the pass after Visser committed to Ferry in the penalty box.

DePaul totaled 12 shots in the game compared to seven for the Quakers. The Blue Demons also attempted seven corner kicks to four for Penn.

The Blue Demons play a pair of non-conference matches next weekend starting Friday Green Bay. Following Friday night’s action, DePaul returns to Wish Field for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday against the Butler Bulldogs.

Game Notes: John Kornfeld’s penalty kick was the first attempt of the season for the Blue Demons... Sunday was the first meeting between the two programs.
