Soccer Alumni Return For Alumni Day 2011
Sept. 13, 2011
CHICAGO-A record-setting turnout for Soccer Alumni Day set the tone for a thrilling day of the Blue Demon soccer on September 11. The action started with nearly 50 alumni playing in the Annual Alumni Game. Alumni, spanning three decades, played for 90 minutes in heart-pounding, sweat-inducing competition.
“It was great to see everyone who came out for Soccer Alumni Day, both old faces and new alumni,” said Bob Kruse, men’s soccer alum 2000-04.
Following the game, alumni, coaches and parents gathered in the Hall of Fame Foyer for a brief reception before heading out to Wish Field to support the current student-athletes. Alumni had the opportunity to interact with Athletic Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto, coaches and staff to share stories about their playing days.
Men’s soccer coach Craig Blazer was truly appreciative of the tremendous alumni support. “It is encouraging to see how many soccer alumni are committed to the future of DePaul’s Soccer Programs. To see that many alumni care is a big lift,” Blazer said.
In addition to the reception, the men’s and women’s soccer alumni were recognized at the halftimes of both the men’s and women’s soccer games. Lenti Ponsetto greeted each alum on Wish Field in front of a near-full Cacciatore Stadium.
If the alumni were not exhausted by the Alumni Game, they certainly had to be worn out by the action-packed Blue Demon doubleheader. The women defeated Minnesota in a double- overtime thriller while the men lost a heartbreaker against No.4 Creighton in another double-overtime heart-pounder.
Women’s soccer coach Erin Chastain was grateful for the alumni support and their contributions to DePaul Soccer. “We are so happy to have had the turnout we had for our Women's Soccer Alumni Day. To have so many alum come out and share in DePaul women's soccer with us means the world to our athletic department and program.”
