Blue Demons Lose In Overtime



EVANSTON, Ill. – The DePaul men’s soccer team lost on a sudden victory Northwestern goal in the final match of the Best Western Lakefront Invitational on Sunday. David Vargas’ header in the 107th proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 decision.

 

After Northwestern (1-2-3) took an early 1-0 lead on a penalty kick, DePaul tied the match 20 minutes later. Luke Rojo scored his second goal of the season off a pass from Kevin Riemer at 35:43. The score would remain at 1-1 for the remainder of regulation as each team buckled down defensively. In the match, DePaul (1-5-0) was able to get off only eight shots while holding the Wildcats to 11 attempts.

 

Following a scoreless overtime, Vargas headed in a shot into the upper left corner off a free kick from Gerardo Alvarez at 106:42.

 

Rojo and Riemer were two of 11 players named to the All-Tournament team. Northwestern won the tournament on goal total with both the Wildcats and Eastern Illinois posting 1-0-1 records.

 

The Blue Demons will take a break as they don’t play again until Sept. 23. DePaul travels to Rogers Park for a match with Loyola-Chicago at 7 p.m.
