Blue Demons Upset No. 11 USF
CHICAGO – Goals by Julian Chill and Alex Mangan pushed DePaul over visiting South Florida on Wednesday afternoon by a 2-1 score at Wish Field. The Bulls entered the match ranked No. 16 in this week’s NSCAA/adidas national rankings and No. 11 in the latest Soccer America top 25.
The first 25 minutes featured the two teams feeling each other out. DePaul (3-7-2, 2-4-0 BIG EAST) captured an opportunity in the 29th minute when Nathan Feltz dribbled to the corner on the right side of the USF net. Feltz sent a cross to the near post where Chill was there knock it to the upper right corner at 28:32.
The score remained at 1-0 through the remainder of the first half and well into the second period. USF (5-3-2, 3-1-2 BIG EAST) created opportunities, but the DePaul defense was there each time to thwart the attempts.
In the 63rd minute, Erich Reichmann’s blast from the top of the box hit the crossbar and bounced back into play where Mangan closed on the ball and attempted a header off the rebound. However, USF’s Dane Brenner was there to make the diving save and keep the score at 1-0.
Mangan made sure he didn’t miss in the 82nd minute as fellow freshman Feltz found him at the top of the box. Mangan gathered the ball and drilled a low liner off the post and into the goal to give the Blue Demons a commanding 2-0 lead at 81:26. For Mangan, it was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
USF didn’t go away as Jordan Seabrook’s header was knocked away by Visser with 1:45 left on the clock. The Bulls broke through with 25 seconds left in regulation on a goal finished by Rodrigo Hildago. Seabrook started the action at midfield and found Sammy Castellanos on the right side. Castellanos fed Hildago in front of the net where he sent home the one-timer at 89:35.
The Blue Demons finished the match with six corner kicks compared to two for the Bulls. USF finished the afternoon with 10 shots while DePaul was able to get off nine attempts. Brian Visser finished the game with six saves while Brenner was credited with three stops.
DePaul concludes the two-match BIG EAST homestand on Saturday with the Villanova Wildcats. Kickoff with Wildcats is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
