Garza's Offensive Prowess Earns BIG EAST Accolade
Sept. 30, 2013
CHICAGO, Ill. – When DePaul’s attack lit up the Wish Field scoreboard last week, it was Art Garza who ignited the offensive outburst.
Recognizing his outstanding play, the BIG EAST Conference on Monday selected Garza for its Weekly Honor Roll.
In a week that saw the Blue Demons score six goals in two matches in a 4-1 victory over Eastern Illinois and a 2-2, double-overtime tie with No. 9/7 St. John’s, Garza was in the center of all the action.
He opened the scoring last Wednesday against Eastern Illinois with a rebound goal in the 27th minute to provide an early 1-0 lead. He helped to finish off the scoring with an assist on Brandon Loncar’s goal in the 80th minute.
Three days later, Garza picked up an assist after his textbook corner kick was headed into the center of the St. John’s net by Jake Rawlings for a 2-1 DePaul lead in the 44th minute.
The back-to-back performances of the talented midfielder certainly caught the attention of the BIG EAST. It also helped extend the Blue Demons’ unbeaten streak to four games.
Garza’s accolade is the second of the season for DePaul. Last week, senior Eric Sorby was chosen BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week.
Garza will lead the Blue Demons into a 7 p.m. North Side rivalry match on Wednesday when they head north on Lake Shore Drive to face Loyola at Loyola Soccer Park.
