Blue Demons Win Second Straight
CHICAGO – The Wish Field success continued for the men’s soccer team as they posted a 1-0 win over visiting Northern Illinois on Wednesday afternoon. Edwin Arreola scored the game-winner in the 87th minute to lift the Blue Demons to their second straight victory.
Both teams had opportunities throughout the match. Early on, Arreola’s header glanced off the crossbar while Northern Illinois (1-7-2) forced DePaul keeper Jeff Klitzke to make four second-half saves. The Blue Demons took a season-high 10 corner kicks, but failed to come up with any goals.
With just under four minutes remaining in the second half, Luke Rojo found Arreola just inside the box on the right side. The sophomore lined up a left-footed shot and sent it past a diving Matt Corcoran for the game-winner at 86:35. For Arreola, it was his second goal of the season coming off of Rojo’s second assist of the year.
In the match, DePaul (3-6-0) outshot the visitors, 11-7. The Blue Demons took five corner kicks in each half while Northern Illinois had a single opportunity. DePaul has now won eight of their last 10 matches at Wish Field, including two consecutive shutouts. The win is also the second straight for the Blue Demons over the Huskies. A year ago, Rojo knocked in the only goal of the match in overtime for the DePaul victory.
